- Be careful that the name of the plant and it is produced in accordance with the correct health standards. Though these standards do not require importance for length, it is best if the body thickness of the walnut sapling is 1.5 – 2 cm. Thicker or thinner, the plant may adopt more difficultly. The body shell must be in the colour specific for the specie, smooth and shiny, the root body must be grown and the graft should be well-blended. After planting the walnut saplings, it is very important for the root and shoot development in the first year to reduce to 40 cm in length.
- It is absolutely necessary to have a sapling certificate. However, it alone does not indicate that the specie is correct. So, when you buy walnut sapling, you should choose reliable companies.
- Note that sapling is not uprooted when it enters the rest period, that is, sheds leaves.
- Be careful that the roots of the saplings are not damaged.
- Pay attention to the amount of hairy root in abundance.
- Roots should be examined and should be checked to see if pest is causing damage to the roots.
- The sapling should not contain sunburn, drying and freezing signs.
- Walnut, like other hard seed fruit trees, should have a maximum shoot age of 1,5 and a rootstock age of 2,5.
- When measuring the diameter of the sapling, take 5 cm above the graft point should be considered.
- The colour difference between shoots and rootstocks must be clear. This shows the maturity of the tree. Mature walnut saplings are more resistant to cold.
- The graft point of the walnut saplings should be 5-10 cm above of the root neck.
- There should be no shoots belonging to the rootstock below the graft point.
- The walnut tree should have at least 3-4 side roots around the pile root and the hairy roots surrounding them.
- By the main walnut species (such as Chandler, Fernor …) you should absolutely plant 5% -7% of pollinator (such as Fernette, Franquette, Ronde de Montagne …) in the walnut orchard.
